Royal Division is an upcoming VR game in which two players co-pilot a 12 meter tall mech, and I got the pleasure to design an SMG for it.
.
The goal was to come up with a P90-like SMG with brutal aesthetics that match the envisioned experience when firing it in-game. A blocky, rectangular front was preferable as it aids the utilitarian feel of it. Having part of the weapon hinge open somehow would allow for great opportunities regarding sound and animation, and adding to that, having some form of visible action or firing mechanism would add a point of interest for the player’s perspective.
.
What we ended up with is a MetalStorm-based firing system on a reciprocating munitions tray to mitigate recoil. The munitions container (magazine) consists of 8 factory prepared barrels in a heavy composite housing with integrated muzzle brake. The barrels would fire in sequence (or all at once to get a shotgun-like spread effect) and since they’re electronically primed, the rate of fire is adjustable.
.
The weapon is about 3.75m long (about 4yrds) based on a 12m (13yrds) tall mech, therefor there are ladders, vents, hatches, forklift slots and crane hooks for transportation and access for maintenance personnel.
